The OVP was basically a single section of the Vilar Perosa M15 attached to a wooden stock and with a few refinements added to it. It had a conventional trigger assembly and resembled a carbine weapon. It could fire both in semi-automatic and automatic modes and was accurate up to 100 meters or so.
The OVP was issued to the Italian military forces in the 1920s and found service until the Second World War. In the Second World War, it saw action in the Abyssian War and also in the Western Desert. Subsequently, it was withdrawn from service.
Though the OVP looks very primitive, it was an innovative weapon for its era. It saw service for quite sometime but its usage was short-lived. It was soon replaced by various other Beretta models.
