The SMLE Mk II is a British rifle that was used extensively during the First World War. The rifle was chambered for the .303 calibre round and used a 10-round magazine box feed system. When compared to other rifles of the time such as the French Lebel, the Mk II was not only smaller but also much lighter and its accuracy was equally good. The rifle was also capable of rapid firing rates because of its smooth and fast bolt action.
The SMLE Mk II was first issued for service in the year 1903. Its design and functional mechanism was based on an earlier design—the Lee-Enfield Mk I of 1895. The Mk I was made from cordite. SMLE Mk II and its variants continued to be in British service for many years. The rifle continues to be used till date in many countries of the world.
Lee-Enfield rifles are very popular as hinting rifles in many countries such as the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. A large number of these guns were exported to other countries after the Second World War.
