Martini-Henry

The Martini-Henry was a British rifle designed in 1870 by RSAF Enfield. It was adopted by the British Armed forces in 1871 and replaced the earlier Snider-Enfield rifle.

The Martini-Henry rifle was chambered for the .451-inch rimmed cartridge. It was accurate up to a distance of 1,500 yards and was capable of firing 10 rounds per minute.

The British Army employed the Martini-Henry rifle in various colonial conflicts such as the Anglo-Zulu War and the Mahdist War. Though the Henry-Martini was very meticulously designed, it would sometimes malfunction in hot and humid conditions. However in the later years, the reasons for this were rectified.

A variant of the Martini-Henry called the “Gahendra” rifle was also manufactured in Nepal. Though its design was a bit advanced than the standard Martini-Henry, the quality differed from rifle to rifle as each was handmade.

The .450 cartridge was smaller than previous ammunition but new methods to reduce the cartridge size further without compromising stopping power were being sought. It was not possible to increase muzzle-velocities further as black powder had low power. Another issue was that lead shots would get deformed at higher velocities.

The answer to the problems was found by a Swiss officer named Rubin who invented the copper-jacketed round. In addition, newer propellants such as Cordite were also invented. The combination of these made the .303 cartridges as an effective round in the field.

After the advent of the .303 cartridges, the Martini-Henry was removed from active service. In the following years, the rifle saw limited action—most notably as a reserve weapon during the First World War.
